How we choose & score

Every swing in this guide is drawn from our own hands-on reviews and scored on the same five-point rubric — never on commission. We weight the factors that matter most to a tired parent:

CriterionWeightWhat we look at
Soothing & motion quality30%How effectively and smoothly it calms a baby — motion types, speeds, consistency.
Safety25%5-point harness, stability, recline range, and conformance to the ASTM F2088 infant-swing standard.
Ease of use & cleaning15%Controls, assembly, and machine-washable / wipeable fabrics.
Footprint & portability15%Floor space, weight, and whether it folds or moves between rooms.

We cross-check manufacturer specs against the ASTM F2088 infant-swing standard, read through verified owner feedback, and re-verify pricing, availability and CPSC recall status before every update. More on our methodology →

Are smart baby swings worth it?

Smart swings earn their premium in two situations: when you want to tweak motion and sound from your phone without disturbing a nearly-asleep baby, and when features like cry detection or saved settings genuinely save you steps.

Be clear-eyed, though: an app is a convenience, not a soothing upgrade. If you just want reliable motion, a simple swing costs far less and works just as well.

And no smart feature replaces supervision — cry detection and apps are conveniences, not safety devices.

Baby swing safety: what every parent should know

Cry detection and app control do not make a swing safe for sleep or safe to leave unattended. Keep your baby in view and harnessed at all times.

Recall watch (do not skip this)

In October 2024, Fisher-Price recalled about 2.1 million Snuga infant swings after they were linked to 5 infant deaths (ages 1–3 months) from suffocation when used for sleep or with added bedding. It is a partial recall — owners should remove and destroy the headrest and body-support insert and never use the swing for sleep. Check the official notice at CPSC.gov.

Also beware uncertified swings sold cheaply on marketplaces: the Safe Sleep for Babies Act (2023) bans inclined sleepers steeper than 10°, and the CPSC has issued 2025 warnings against import swings (e.g. Elephtt-baby) that violate it. Buy only swings that meet the ASTM F2088 standard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app-controlled baby swing?

The 4moms mamaRoo is the best smart swing — five motions with full app and Bluetooth control. For hands-free soothing, the Graco Sense2Soothe adds automatic Cry Detection.

Are smart baby swings worth it?

If you value adjusting motion and sound from your phone, saved settings, or cry detection, yes. If you only want reliable motion, a simpler swing costs much less and performs just as well.

What is cry detection on a baby swing?

Cry detection (as on the Graco Sense2Soothe) uses a microphone to sense when your baby fusses and automatically adjusts the motion and sound to try to soothe them. It is a convenience feature, not a substitute for supervision.

Do smart swings replace supervision?

No. Apps and cry detection are conveniences only — always keep your baby in view, buckled, and never use any swing for sleep.

Can a baby sleep in a smart swing?

No. Regardless of features, swings are not a safe-sleep environment. Move a sleeping baby to a firm, flat crib or bassinet on their back (AAP guidance).
