What to look for in a swing for a newborn

The single most important feature for a newborn is a deep recline. Until about 4 months, before a baby has strong head control, use the most reclined setting so the head can’t slump forward and narrow the airway. Pair that with soft head support and a true 5-point harness.

Favour gentle, quiet motion over lots of speed, and keep sessions short and supervised — newborns shouldn’t spend long stretches in any reclined seat. Our newborn swing guide covers the full setup.

Most swings are rated from birth to 20–30 lb, so a higher weight ceiling buys more months of use — though for the newborn stage specifically, recline and support matter most.

Baby swing safety: what every parent should know

Newborns are the highest-risk group for swing-sleep incidents, so the most-reclined-position and never-for-sleep rules below are especially important.

Recall watch (do not skip this)

In October 2024, Fisher-Price recalled about 2.1 million Snuga infant swings after they were linked to 5 infant deaths (ages 1–3 months) from suffocation when used for sleep or with added bedding. Owners should remove and destroy the headrest and body-support insert and never use the swing for sleep. The 4moms MamaRoo and RockaRoo were also recalled (2022) for a strap-entanglement hazard, with a free remedy. Check the official notices at CPSC.gov and our recall guide.

Also beware uncertified swings sold cheaply on marketplaces: the Safe Sleep for Babies Act (2023) bans inclined sleepers steeper than 10°. Buy only swings that meet the ASTM F2088 standard.

Frequently asked questions

Can a newborn use a baby swing?

Yes — most swings are rated from birth. Use the most reclined position with good head support, always buckle the harness, supervise, and keep sessions short. Never use a swing for sleep.

What is the best baby swing for a newborn?

We rank the 4moms mamaRoo first for newborns thanks to its gentle multi-motion and deep, supportive seat. The Graco SmartSense is the best hands-free option, and the Graco Simple Sway is the best value.

What recline should a newborn swing be set to?

The most reclined (flattest) setting available. Until around 4 months, an upright seat can let a newborn’s head slump forward and narrow the airway.

Can a newborn sleep in a baby swing?

No. Newborn swing-sleep carries the highest risk of positional asphyxia. Move a sleeping newborn to a firm, flat crib or bassinet on their back (AAP guidance).

When should you stop using a baby swing?

Stop once your baby exceeds the weight limit, can sit up unassisted, or starts trying to climb out — usually around 6 to 9 months.
